6th - 8th Grade
Middle School
ELAR (English Language Arts & Reading)
The Middle School Program emphasizes mastery of reading and writing through project-based learning. In the Roots Room, students engage in class novel studies, annual poetry units, and in-depth writing process instruction. Activities focus on refining grammar, mechanics, and critical thinking skills, preparing students for advanced literacy and communication challenges.

Science, Math, & Humanities
The program in the Roots Room offers an in-depth exploration of physics, chemistry, and biology through a three-year rotational cycle and engage in hands-on experiments and projects that reinforce their learning. Each year students also compete in a Future City project where they apply STEM principles to design a sustainable city, integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a real-world context. Learn more about the Future City competition here.
In middle school, students prepare for pre-algebra and algebra, focusing on solving equations, working with variables, and exploring algebraic expressions. The program also delves into advanced geometry and emphasizes applying mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios, giving students plenty of practice applying their problem-solving skills.
Roots Roomers study global history through the Story Cycle lens, examining how historical events are connected and cyclical. Students learn how both individuals and movements have shaped societies and driven progress, and the role and impact of activism, leadership, and innovation throughout history.

Social-Emotional & Behavioral Growth
The middle school program focuses on respectful interactions, nonviolent conflict resolution and mediation, and self-awareness. Students learn to navigate disagreements constructively and develop effective communication, empathy, and collaborative problem-solving skills to strengthen their relationships and contribute to a positive school environment.
The program also emphasizes time management, responsibility, and leadership. Students take ownership of their academic and social responsibilities, prepare thoroughly for lessons, and serve as role models by assisting younger peers, fostering a strong sense of community and mentorship.
